Down 2 Sets, Sandburg Volleyball Rallies for Win vs. Spoon River

The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team shrugged off a slow start and rallied to defeat Spoon River 23-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20, 16-14 on Friday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium. 

In addition to coming back from two sets down, the Chargers (6-6) held off a match point in the fifth, winning the final three points of the match. Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) kept the Chargers alive with the last of her season-high 10 kills to make it 14-14. Following a Snappers (1-17) hitting error, Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) served up an ace to secure the victory.

Setter Carmyn Baldwin (Lewistown, Ill./Lewistown) had a season-best 44 assists in addition to delivering a season-high four aces. Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) also had four aces to tie a season-high, and the freshman put down 12 kills along while collecting a personal-best 21 digs.

Sophomore Annie McKim (Yates City, Ill./homeschooled) had a career-high 13 kills for the Chargers, and Hobson’s 25 digs from the libero position also were a career-high.

Sandburg’s comeback began with a 7-0 run on Baldwin’s serve to go up 15-7 in the third set, and the Chargers took the final five points of the third. Up 16-13 in the fourth, back-to-back kills from McKim opened a 5-1 stretch for the Chargers that helped push the match to a decisive fifth.
